Following a Manhattans management retreat to Whitstable last weekend (oysters on the seafront, board meeting in the hot tub) we’re back in town and getting ready for the weekend.

While we were away we did a bit of riffing on the menu and the result was The Little Hook. Somewhere between a Red Hook and a Little Italy, this cheeky short and amaroidal drink has bitter artichoke liqueur Cynar lending Punt e Mes a hand in keeping the Red Hook’s sweet Maraschino in check. All above a solid base of Rittenhouse 100 rye with a little flamed orange peel for nose and pyrotechnics.

The Little Hook

• 5ml Cynar
• 15ml Maraschino
• 15ml Punt e Mes
• 35ml Rittenhouse 100

Stirred on the rocks with orange peel flamed into the glass beforehand.
